When mental disorders are manageable

Scott Lilienfeld and his collaborator Brian Andrews established research that demonstrated that psychopathy is on a spectrum. They developed a psychometric personality inventory, they conceptualised psychopathy as an extension of normal personality and claim that psychopathy is scalar. Less familiar but equally pertinent is the schizophrenic spectrum. Research on the construct of schizotypy suggest that psychotic experiences of one form or another (usually of the harmless and non distressing variety) are relatively common among the general population as a whole, and that rather than being seen as a unitary condition – you have either got it or you haven’t – schizophrenia should be viewed as a dimensional disorder with arbitrary cut offs between normal odd and ill. Exactly as with psychopathy at low to medium altitudes the disorder is perfectly manageable. Beneficial even in some context (the link between schizotypy and creativity is well established). But above and beyond the show line condition get ever more hazardous.
