Explaining Delusions

The precursors of delusions and hallucinations are constituted by fantasies and illusions, wishful thinking and fallacies which formally are identical with those experienced by normal persons. But here again schizophrenic autism makes a distinction between fantasy and reality with the result that delusions and hallucinations become equals of, or even superior to, the real experiences. The foundation of the superiority of autism in schizophrenia consists in its indispensability as a protection against unbearable emotional stresses which threaten the oversensitive schizophrenic. In the non schizophrenic personality the autistic mechanisms are flexible, in the schizophrenic they are fixed. The mind have a file, a sorting out stimuli that allows only those thoughts which are relevant to the situation into consciousness. What happens to some people is a breakdown in the filtering. The hypothesis is that schizophrenic features like over inclusive thinking are due to very weak filtration of the contents of thoughts, resulting in the psychotic individual finding it difficult to pursue a logically connected train of ideas. Using specially arranged cognitive tasks it has been possible to show that this inhibition is weaker than average in psychotic individuals.
